Tracking and vocal production are the same afternoon more often than not. Getting a take is partly a signal-path question and mostly a question of what the room feels like to sing in — an artist who is comfortable gives you the performance on take three instead of take thirty.
The technical side stays out of the way on purpose. Decisions that would otherwise be made at the mic get deferred to a stage where they are still reversible, so nothing about a session forecloses on what the record can become later.
Because the same hands usually mix the record afterwards, what gets captured is captured with the mix already in mind — which is the quiet advantage of not splitting the two jobs across two people.
